A fabric for all weathers

Designer Karina Nielsen Rios teamed up with Kvadrat to develop the outdoor fabric “Patio”, which is both sturdy and environmentally friendly. And it looks good into the bargain.
Flutter is a sophisticated woollen upholstery fabric that continues the exploration of embroidery techniques and visual effects seen in Jongerius’s earlier works for Maharam and Kvadrat, for instance the Layers upholstery series and Argali rug.
Transformed by Hella Jongerius from a drawing to a handsewn sample, Flutter’s embroidered pattern captures the details and movement observed in a study of cascading feathers. Meticulously stitched in individual layers, single lines overlap and build to indicate motion across 16 individual motifs, each of which is composed of five colours. Describing the technique as “sketching with thread,” Hella Jongerius explains: “The embroidery, which is done layers over layers, highlights this dynamic. The colours mix optically: from a few lines that unite with the ground colour to a dense surface when totally covered.”
The pattern has been realized using four neutral colourways from the Remix palette designed by Giulio Ridolfo as a base. Its flat, smooth surface and tightly woven structure offsets the textile’s detailed embroidery. Flutter’s refined palette blends shades of grey with a selection of citron, amber, pink, sage, lime, green, blue, brown, silver, and golden hues.
