TONNEAU

Designed in 1954 by Pierre Guariche, the Tonneau Carver chair is a true icon of mid‑20th century furniture design. The Tonneau Carver chair combines a soft, sensual moulded plywood shell with a slim black lacquered steel base to create a refined silhouette that remains remarkably comfortable. The single-piece bent plywood seat, with its visible screws where the ends meet, and the leather seat pad give the Tonneau Carver chair a distinctive aesthetic that balances craftsmanship and industrial production.

The leather pad on the Tonneau Carver chair rests on the plywood shell and is now fixed with Velcro rather than strings, while the seat has been raised to better suit contemporary body shapes. For the carver version, the armrests are made from solid stained beech, adding warmth and a natural contrast to the black metal base. Materials specified include moulded plywood with beech veneer, a black lacquered steel frame and a black leather seat pad, contributing to the chair’s durable yet elegant character.

The Tonneau Carver chair is suitable for both domestic and contract settings, offering a compact footprint combined with a strong visual presence. Its historical significance, quality of materials and timeless form make the Tonneau Carver chair a lasting design classic.
