Cependant Vitra est bien plus qu’une entreprise de production orientée sur le design. Vitra représente également un musée, le Vitra Design Museum, une collection de meubles de l’époque moderne et de leurs archives, des ateliers et publications sur le thème du design et une approche de l’architecture qui réunit, au siège social à Birsfelden (Suisse) et sur le site Vitra à Weil am Rhein (Allemagne), des bâtiments de Frank Gehry, Nicholas Grimshaw, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, Herzog & de Meuron et SANAA.
